About the conference
A platform built around the realities of an ageing society
People are living longer, and the share of older adults keeps growing. The number of people over the age of 60 is expected to double by 2050. That shift raises urgent questions about medical treatment, social welfare and financial security, and it opens a fast growing market for products and services designed for the silver age.
Japan combines one of the lowest fertility rates in the world with the highest life expectancy, and the country is meeting the challenge with a strong emphasis on technology. Panasonic, for example, developed a smart walker that uses artificial intelligence to help users stay mobile and independent for as long as possible.
As labour structures change, new lifestyles have emerged. Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability, known as LOHAS, describe a market segment linked to sustainable living, and the idea has become one of the guiding spirits behind this conference.

Authors submit an abstract or a full paper through the online submission system. Accepted work is confirmed by email, and at least one author of each accepted paper must complete registration and payment for the paper to appear in the programme.

Dr. Afshin Gharib

What Type of Exam Should We Use? A Comparison of Closed Book, Open Book and Crib Sheet Tests
Afshin Gharib studies learning, memory and ageing, the effects of humane education, and the factors that influence how students learn. He earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from Brown University and his doctorate in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley.
Venue and host
Sapporo, Hokkaido
The conference was held at the Premier Hotel Tsubaki Sapporo, at 1 1 Toyohira 4 jo 1 chome, Toyohira ku, Sapporo. The hotel sits a short walk from the Kikusui subway station on the Tozai line.
Our local host, Kurt Ackermann of Hokusei Gakuen University, welcomed delegates to the northernmost main island of Japan and introduced the city beyond the conference rooms.
